Day 36, August 4, 13.2 miles
We had to say goodbye to Honey and Bear this morning. Hated to leave them. Bear drove us back to the trail where we got off yesterday and the view over the lake was different this morning. The storm had come and gone. We got reports that we shouldn’t hike today because the trail was one big mud bog. Well, it was definitely a mud bog, but after going mud bogging everyday in Vermont, we weren’t scared. It turned out to be a great hike. Yes, it was muddy, but the trail elevation was actually pleasant (as far as the AT in Maine goes).
There were several ponds along the trail today. Sabbath Day Pond was one with an actual little sandy side for swimming. I didn’t swim, but should have. I needed another bath. Believe it or not, wearing the same clothes only 2 days straight was quite sickening. Phew!!
I made quite a mistake today when I tried to step down off a slick boulder. I put my foot in between a crack in the rock and stepped down with my left foot first and slid with my right foot stuck in the crack. I twisted and banged my right knee. I’m icing it and taking Vit. I and hoping it improves–we’ll see in the morning.
It’s been so nice the last few days at the Cabin to have Joyce and Tina, the wives of Pilgrim and Howard to talk to and visit with. They are here slackpacking their husbands. I’ve enjoyed their company. We need more women on the trail.
Turning in now with it raining once again.
