Taking a Zero

The Farmhouse Inn

The Farmhouse Inn

So I’m taking a zero today at the Farmhouse Inn Hostel to have this knee checked out.  The hostel is such a nice place. I think Danny and I could do a drive up to Maine someday and revisit all these awesome hostels. The rest of the group are hiking already and will stay at the shelter 11 miles up the trail. Don’t think I’ll be able to catch them. 😞 The  Read More

Day 36, August 4, 13.2 miles

We had to say goodbye to Honey and Bear this morning. Hated to leave them. Bear drove us back to the trail where we got off yesterday and the view over the lake was different this morning. The storm had come and gone. We got reports that we shouldn’t hike today because the trail was one big mud bog. Well, it was definitely a mud bog, but after going mud bogging everyday in Vermont, we Read More

Day 35, August 3, 13.2 miles

Last slackpack day–boohoo. I think while the trail is never easy, it seems easier when your slackpacking. Lifting yourself up on and over boulders seems so much easier with 10 extra lbs. as opposed to 30 extra lbs.

Today’s trail was good except it was horribly rooty. The roots are like monster arms that you have to try Read More

Day 34, August 2, 10.3 miles

Earl (Bear) took us to the trailhead today after another delicious homemade breakfast. Today was waffles with blueberry sauce, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and homemade jam.

The five of us headed out and quickly separated and today’s trail was very pleasant. It was dry which is always a bonus. We had a really fun rebar and ladder climb up Moody Mtn (which is where I made my posts yesterday). I enjoyed Read More

Day 33, August 1, 10.3 miles

Woke up to my 5:30 am alarm and got ready for 6:00 am breakfast. Marge and Earl had prepared blueberry pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits, potatoes, gravy, real maple syrup and homemade jam. Just what an AT hiker loves. It was all delicious. They asked me if I wanted to Read More

The Mahoosuc Notch

(Trying to post quickly from top of Moody Mtn  Got my pics on wrong dates for last post–too bad  Don’t have time or patience to change it. Oops!) Also excuse typos. Not proofing.

Day 32, July 31, 9.7 miles

I went canyoneering today.

The whole shelter was up at 5 am and 8 of us hiked out this morning by 6 am. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. We hiked for 1.5 miles to the infamous Mahoosuc Notch. It is dubbed “the hardest mile on the AT.” It is literally a jungle gym in the bottom of a canyon. Giant boulders that must be navigated under, over, through and around. We all stuck together today to try to work as a team to get through. A Read More

Day 30, July 29, 11.8 miles

Can you say Creme Brûlée French toast? Yep, that’s what was for breakfast, but that’s just the beginning. Marnie fixes plates and hands them out at 7 am. On the plate is a giant piece of the French toast, a huge chocolate chip muffin, two potato cakes, and two sausage links. Yummiest breakfast!! Just what hungry hikers need. And oh, there was coffee, milk and orange juice too. Read More

Day 29, July 28, 8.1 miles

Had a very nice thunderstorm last night. The only problem is now I have to carry a wet tent. Oh well. There are much worse problems to have. When I got up and packed up, we met down at the bear box for a 6 am departure to try to get to US2, which is in Gorham, and is a 0.1 mile road walk to the White Mountain Hostel.

Day 28, July 27, 13.1 miles

Whoop, whoop. I got new shoes. How exciting. I had ordered them to be sent to me and they have arrived. Just thought I’d share.

Today started with a really fun all-fours climb for a couple of hours. Then, it was constant ups and downs and the downs were really steep (as is always in the Whites). I’m sure I’ve said it before, but I’m really started to hate the downs. They are really treacherous and it seems it’s Read More
