Day 8, July 7, 15 miles
Wow. I had the best nights sleep. The hostel was fabulous. This morning I had toast with lots of butter and an orange for breakfast. It was delicious.
Leaving town with a full resupply is always hard. It’s heavy for one thing, and town is always in the bottom so there’s always an immediate climb. But, today was a good day. I was rested with dry feet and I smelled good–really good. Of course that changed within about an hour. I was sweating on the climb, and then the rain came once again. It rained for about an hour. I ducked into a shelter for lunch and waited there until it stopped. The sun came out. I headed back out and planned to go 2 more shelters up. After 3 miles more, the thunder started and it started raining again. I stopped 15 miles in at the second shelter, drenched, and decided to call it a day. The forecast is the same for tomorrow.
My favorite part of the day was when a young German guy named Breakless passed me and asked me my trail name. When I told him Speck, he replied, “You mean like the fatty part of the ham?” I said, “Bacon?” He said, “Yes, bacon. That’s what Speck means in German.” Haha. Anybody that has ever eaten with me knows my favorite food is bacon–how funny. Who knew?
I’m in the shelter, once again–ugh. Too wet to tent. Here tonight is Michele and her dog, Rosie, Biscuit, and Poco.
Actually got a couple of views today as you can see in the pics.

Glad you got some good sleep after all the rain and mud! Go Speck Go!

I thought you should name your pack Bruce because it rhymes with spruce and moose. Now I think you should just name it Bacon! 😀
